The Metrograph, New York City's beloved independent cinema house, has announced the launch of its first print publication, Metrograph Magazine, furthering its mission to celebrate and explore film culture. The quarterly magazine debuts as a natural extension of the theater's commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue about cinema.
Since opening its doors in 2016, the Metrograph has established itself as a cultural hub for film enthusiasts in Manhattan's Lower East Side. The new publication aims to capture the theater's curatorial vision and intellectual spirit in print form, featuring essays, interviews, and critical analysis from prominent film writers and critics.
The magazine's inaugural issue includes:
- In-depth interviews with contemporary filmmakers
- Critical essays exploring film history and theory
- Photo essays featuring rare archival materials
- Reviews of both classic and contemporary films
Alexander Olch, Metrograph's founder, describes the magazine as "a natural progression" for the institution. "We've always viewed the Metrograph as more than just a movie theater," says Olch. "The magazine allows us to extend our conversation about cinema beyond our physical space and reach film lovers everywhere."
The quarterly publication will be available for purchase at the theater's bookstore, through the Metrograph website, and at select bookstores nationwide. The magazine joins the theater's existing digital presence, which includes its successful Metrograph Digital platform launched during the pandemic.
With this new venture, the Metrograph continues to evolve as a multifaceted cultural institution, proving that even in an increasingly digital world, there remains a vital space for thoughtful, carefully curated print media dedicated to the art of cinema.
